What is Co-operative
Housing ?
Non-profit housing co-operatives offer their
residents more. Being member-owned, operating policies are decided
through a democratic process. There is no landlord, thus no
profit-motive. The housing charge is based on operating costs
only. This means fine quality homes at a fair monthly charge. Unlike
rents, housing charges rise only with increases in operating costs
and are substantially less than comparable housing
units.
Residents buy a membership (share) in the co-op. This
entitles them to lifetime residency. In the event that a resident
moves out of the co-operative, their shares are sold back to the
co-op. In the meantime, the money from the shares goes toward
helping to maintain the co-op, at least indirectly.
Member
participation in the operation of the co-op helps to build a sense
of community and helps to minimize housing costs. Decisions about
the running of each co-op are made democratically by the members
through the election of a volunteer board of directors. In addition,
co-op housing provides a unique opportunity for people to share and
assist each other in ways beyond their housing needs.
